Line

Definition and Theory

A line is metaphorical for a 'path' between two points. There are many different types and forms for a line, they can be either; straight, curvy, zigzagged,  horizontal, vertical or diagonal. They can be representative for motion. Some lines are implied and are shown by geometrically positioned points, so that the mind can put together where the line is/ can be.

The different types of lines represent and imply different things;

Horizontal lines represent/ imply peace, harmony and tranquility.

Vertical lines represent/ imply power and strength.

Diagonal lines represent/ imply movement action or change.

Curved lines (s-lines) represent/ imply quiet clam or sensual feeling

Converging lines represent/ imply depth, scale, distance or form.

Walker Evans

Walker Evans was an American Photojournalist born in 1903 and died in 1975. He commonly photographed the daily life of the average american citizen, but also took photos on the streets of street signs and roads.

2 improvements

I have chosen IMG_0822.JPG and IMG_0784.JPG for improvements because, the first photo as stuff in-between the baskets which ruins the idea of the photo, which is the lines, it also is blurry. I chose the 2nd photo as the image has my foot in it which obstructs the image and ruins the idea of 'lines'. To correct this next time, before i take the photo i will ensure the camera is in focus, that you can see everything properly an that nothing is obstructing the image.

6 Best Photographs

I have chosen these 4 images as my best because you can clearly see where the theme of line its in; which the cross panelling lines of the squares, the roof with the congruent meeting lines, the stairs with its horizontal lines, and the shadow with its parallel lines and the diagonal lined pattern on the floor.

Furthermore, the second image was inspired by Walker Evans, as Walker Evans was infamous for shots of urban landscapes, and this image was taken in a urban area in Harlow, and is of a canopy. But, Walker Evans almost always has monochrome images, and have a clear shadow and light area, to correct this i will edit it in photoshop, or maybe retake the image on a brighter day.

AO3: Record ideas, observations and insights relevant to intentions, reflecting critically on work and progress.

The idea behind photographing urban landscapes was to capture and explore different lines such as horizontal, vertical, diagonal, curved and converging lines, in urban adnd suburban environments such as Harlow and Stansted Mountfitchet. I was inspired by the photographer Walker Evans street and urban images in regards to ideas, composition and style. His use of urban environments gave me the idea to photograph areas around were i live, Stansted Mountfitchet and Harlow.
I liked how the images came out, but i had to edit them to fit the style of Walker Evans, being monochromatic, but also the exposure and brightness to get a clear difference between the light and dark areas.

The image of the gridded tiles is shot at a straight angle so the lines would run both horizontal and vertically, but also so that they can have signature lines vertically in all directions.

The image of the stairs was (almost) take straight on so you could see the horizontal lines of the stairs themselves, i also had the vertical lines in the railings and hand railings.

But with the other images, i did not have enough experience to toggle with stuff so i couldn't take the best i could and with practise i  can overcome that.

AO2: Explore and select appropriate resources, media, materials, techniques and processes, reviewing and refining ideas as work develops.

To improve my images imported them to photoshop to make them monochrome and adjust exposure and brightness.

after that i went to image>adjustments>grayscale

then i wasn't happy with the exposure so i re-adjusted it

This is it after;

AO1;  Develop ideas through sustained and focused investigations informed by contextual and other sources, demonstrating analytical and critical understanding.

My artists research on Walker Evans was useful because i leant about the hard geometric shape in urban environments, which i can/ could incorporate into my own work. This is especially helpful to me as i go to college in a semi-urban area, Harlow, and used to live in London, Islington, a very urban area. However research into the emotional impact of lines was not useful at all, but i did try to use lead in lines, especially with the stairs.

AO4; Present a personal and meaningful response that realises intentions and, where appropriate, makes connections between visual and other elements.
