colour

Colour
Colour Definition
the property possessed by an object of producing different sensations on the eye as a result of the way it reflects or emits light.

Theory on colour and emotion

Colour can and has the capacity to affect the human psyche. It can affect our moods and how we feel depending on what a colour connotes and wether it is surrounding us for example red connotes passion and anger, blue is melancholy and sadness, green is greed, yellow is happiness, purple is regality and orange is energetic.

Definitions

Analogous: two colours that are smilier and sit next to each there on the cop colour wheel

Complementary;  they sit opposite to each other on the colour wheel. they exhibit brighter colours when sat to each other.

monochrome; flushed and devoid of colour leaving the tones of black, white and gray.

saturated; highly intense and 'pure' colours

muted; any colour mixed with a tone ( black white gray)

Warm colours; associated with flood, fire, the sun and passion.

cold coloursassociated with snow, ice and water.

primary; the colours of which can't be created; in colour space this is red, yellow and blue, in subtractive combinations ( dyes and pigment) this is magenta, yellow and cyan.

secondary; colour resulting from the mixture of two primary colours

Examples

Jumpsuit - Twenty One Pilots

In the music video, all the colours are muted, accept for the yellow on the jumpsuits. This gives a lingering feeling of melancholy or sadness. This is also supported by the lyrics which detail the resistance of a cult called 'Dema', which suggest the world Tyler Joseph is creating here is devoid of happiness and colour.

Smile Like You mean It - The Killers

Here the colours are muted, accept for the flashbacks or the 'ghosts'. This suggests that the world is bleak and depressing, and that his memories of his childhood is the only thing that bring joy, or that reminiscing on his memories makes him happy in an otherwise bleak world, supported by the lyric 'smile like you mean it'

These Days - Wallows

Here the tint of the colours is saturated, which give the video an 80s- 90s vibe, which is in the style of Wallows, which utilise genre blending. The colours are also very warm and analogous, which reinforces the idea that this is in the style of an old video.

Research

Mark Knight

Mark Knight born 1958 on the 24th of November, is a British fashion photographer. He is an honorary professor at the University of Arts London, and was awarded a Ph. D there. He is known for his photographs of flowers and of fashion. In his photos he edits the photos to have muted colours to give a feeling of melancholy, which is the polar opposite of what most flowers represent, especially roses, which symbolise passion and affection. He also uses  both harmonious and analogous colours to reinforced a feeling of melancholy. W

These photos represent the images I could capture around Harlow and Mountfitchet, and link to Mark Knight. They represent the colour theories presented above, in the harmonising colours of blue and orange, and the humongous colours of orange and yellow.

2 improvements;

The photos could be improved by having them shot in focus, and have taken in a different angle, maybe head one as that's how Mark Knight shot photos.

AO3;Record ideas, observations and insights relevant to intentions, reflecting critically on work and progress.

My idea for recording colour was to capture the vivid colour in nature and present how particular colour theorems are presented in nature and flowers, such as harmonising, monogamous, warm and cool, saturated and muted, and primary and secondary colours.

Within my best selected photos, I could improve; having more exposure in the picture of the rose, in all of the photos I could've shot in better weather conditions and a different time of day to make the pictures look better and lighter and to have a different type of unique exposure and contrast that comes with the diffrent lighting at different times of day.

Muted

AO1; Develop ideas through sustained and focused investigations informed by contextual and other sources, demonstrating analytical and critical understanding.

The artist research was helpful as it taught me how using the colours in particular ways and manipulating them in photoshop can give an implied meaning and specific mood to a photo. My research on Mark Knight has helped understand that using colours that are usually used to imply happiness and joy, can be manipulated to show melancholy when muted. This was helpful as Harlow has a mix of a melancholy mood, from an outsiders perspective, but also vibrant colours especially in the park areas and the flower shops, but also where I live, Stansted Mountfitchet, is a very rural are with a lot of flowers around the place.

AO4;Present a personal and meaningful response that realises intentions and, where appropriate, makes connections between visual and other elements.

  1. A good post Taylor, I would suggest that you start to record you camera settings from this point onwards, to do so select, File, File Info in Photoshop. also I like the treatment and use of screen shots to explain your edit technique. I think that this series could be expanded further but work on your composition and take wider shots as well as close ups
